Our lovable Lie-Downs have had the privilege of playing in the national spotlight on Thanksgiving for countless seasons over the years, unfortunately for their fans (what's left of them) this could soon come to an end.
They've been the butt of many jokes for many, many seasons, and there is rising public sentiment they no longer should host one of the annual Thanksgiving Day football games. As tough, and as hard as it probably is for Lions fans to come to terms with, this is probably the right decision.
I've heard stories from many uncles and victims of the franchise that love to recall their memorable games on turkey days. These games seem to be a thing of the past, a mere memory. Although the Lions we're always far from "automatic" on thanksgiving, in the 70's/80's and even 90's they could pull out a few barn burners and come through for some exciting wins once in a while.
They've lost every Thanksgiving since 2003, and have only won twice this decade. It's not only that their losing on thanksgiving...it's that their getting embarrassed. The Lions have been a lifeless bunch that have gotten run over on their own turf for too long now. The NFL Nation needs to see, and deserves to see the high level of football that most of the league puts out week in and week out.
There is so much talent and skill out there in the NFL, and especially on a holiday like Thanksgiving, where all the average schlup wants to do is eat and watch football, it deserves to be showcased on a national level. Even the Cowboys act (even as they win year after year) is getting tiresome. Seeing Jerry Jones every year in the late hours of the afternoon is slowly killing my holiday.
Maybe a rotational system for Thanksgiving day games would be best? The NFL can pick an AFC and NFC rivalry each year and let the teams have their time to shine on turkey day. So as difficult as it may be for Lion Nation to recognize and understand, their days on Thanksgiving may be numbered.
